April 4, 2026 NEW YORK, NY New York City is finally giving parents the break they’ve been screaming for, and they’ve recruited the "WAP" superstar to make sure you’re listening.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Cardi B officially pulled back the curtain Friday on "2-K"—the city’s ambitious push for free child care for two-year-olds. But while the news is music to the ears of exhausted parents, the city wants you to provide the actual soundtrack. There’s just one problem: The robots aren't invited.

The "No-Bot" Jingle Challenge

City Hall has launched a high-stakes contest to find the official 2-K theme song. They’re looking for a 15- to 30-second earworm that tells families how to sign up. The winner gets their voice on the radio and a seat at the table with Cardi herself.

But in a move that is "very 2026," the rules come with a massive caveat: No AI allowed.

If you were planning on letting a computer generate your lyrics or melody, forget it. The city is demanding "100% human" creativity. Entrants must be NYC residents over 18, and while there is no cash prize, the city is offering something they think is better: "Clout." By entering, you’re giving the city permanent rights to your work, your name, and your face.

"I Can Get 'Em Both"

The program is being billed as a game-changer for working-class families. Using a nod to Cardi’s own lyrics, Mayor Mamdani declared, "I can get ’em both. I don’t wanna choose." He’s talking about the impossible choice many New Yorkers face: paying for astronomical child care or leaving the city they love. 2-K aims to end that struggle, starting with 2,000 free seats this fall and a promise of universal access within four years.

"Sometimes us women can’t really go forward because we don’t have nobody to help us take care of our kids," Cardi B said in the video announcement, underscoring the necessity of the program for the next generation of New Yorkers.

The Fine Print: Is Your Neighborhood In?

Before you get too excited, check the map. The initial rollout is hitting five specific districts:

  • District 6 & 10: The Bronx and Upper Manhattan

  • District 18 & 23: Central and East Brooklyn

  • District 27: The Rockaways/South Queens

The Big Snub? Staten Island. The administration says they’re focusing on "high-need" areas with the space to grow quickly, but the exclusion has already sparked heated debate across the Verrazzano.

How to Apply (and How to Sing)

  • Jingle Deadline: Submissions are due by April 17.

  • The Judges: A panel of experts and Cardi B will whittle it down to five finalists before the public votes.

  • 2-K Applications: Mark your calendars for June 2 through June 26.

  • Where to go: Head to myschools.nyc to get your family in the running.

The city is heading toward a future where "free child care" isn't a pipe dream, but for now, the race is on to see who can write the song of the summer—without the help of an algorithm.
