July 18, 2025 BROOKLYN, N.Y. – A disturbing incident unfolded on the Fourth of July in Brooklyn, as an opportunistic thief allegedly preyed on a 71-year-old woman, offering to fix a phantom water leak before making off with cash and jewelry. The NYPD is now seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspect.
The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. near 84th Street and 4th Avenue. According to police reports, the suspect initially approached the elderly woman as she was entering her apartment, offering to help her with her walker – a seemingly kind gesture that quickly turned sinister.
Once the woman was inside her home, the man allegedly knocked on her door, claiming he could resolve a "water leak." He then instructed the unsuspecting victim to repeatedly turn her faucet on and off, effectively distracting her.
While the woman was occupied, the suspect reportedly entered her bedroom, stealing approximately $230 in cash from her purse and jewelry valued at around $900. After the theft, he fled the apartment, last seen running southbound on 4th Avenue. He was described as wearing a white T-shirt, dark-colored pants, and white sneakers.
Protecting Yourself from Deceptive Scams
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance, especially for vulnerable populations. Con artists often target seniors, exploiting trust and creating urgency to gain access to homes or personal information.
Here are some crucial tips to protect yourself and your loved ones:
- Be Wary of Unsolicited Offers: Never allow unexpected visitors into your home, especially if they are offering services you haven't requested.
- Verify Credentials: If someone claims to be from a utility company or offering a service, always ask for identification and verify their claims by calling the company directly using a publicly listed number, not one provided by the individual.
- Trust Your Gut: If something feels off or too good to be true, it likely is. Don't be pressured into making quick decisions.
- Keep Valuables Secure: Store cash, jewelry, and other valuable items in a safe and discreet location.
- Report Suspicious Activity: If you encounter a suspicious individual or situation, report it to the police immediately.
