August 26, 2025 PROSPECT HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN — In a dramatic scene straight out of a thriller, a long-simmering neighbor dispute in Brooklyn's Prospect Heights neighborhood culminated in a brutal shooting this week, leaving a woman injured and her alleged assailant on the run.
The violent incident unfolded on Saint John's Place around 8:45 a.m. on a Tuesday morning. According to authorities and witnesses, a 49-year-old woman was shot in the arm and leg during a terrifying encounter with the man who lives directly below her.
Neighbors told Eyewitness News that the victim had been complaining for some time to the building's superintendent about being harassed by her downstairs neighbor. What started as a dispute over noise or personal boundaries escalated into a full-blown confrontation in the building's hallway.
The attack, described by police as a culmination of the ongoing feud, began when the suspect allegedly confronted the woman and repeatedly struck her with the butt of a gun. When the building's super rushed to help, the gunman reportedly threatened him before firing shots at the woman.
After the shooting, the suspect, described as 5'10" and 155 pounds, wearing a navy blue shirt and pants, initially seemed to be barricaded in his apartment. However, when police entered, they found the unit empty. It's believed he may have made his escape via a back fire escape.
The injured woman was rushed to New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
A witness, whose identity is being withheld, described the chaotic moments to reporters, saying, "There was just a bunch of yelling and screaming at the beginning, two or three seconds, then a gunshot...a bunch of more screaming. And then I poked my head out, and I heard the super say there was a gun go inside."
Police are actively searching for the suspect. This shocking act of violence serves as a stark reminder of how quickly seemingly minor conflicts can spiral out of control. Residents of the quiet, brownstone-lined street are now left grappling with the aftermath of what could be a tragic end to a private war between neighbors.
