April 30, 2026 BROOKLYN, NY — The neon lights of Coney Island couldn't reach the shadows of Mermaid Avenue this past Saturday, where a late-night stroll transformed into a scene of absolute carnage.
Just after midnight on April 25, the relative quiet of West 21st Street was shattered by a group of four men who launched a "senseless and violent" unprovoked attack on two bystanders, leaving them bleeding on the pavement as the suspects vanished into the night.
A Calculated Attack
The horror began when the four suspects swarmed a 28-year-old woman. Without warning, the group began a relentless assault, raining punches down on her face and body. The violence escalated instantly when one of the attackers produced a "cutting instrument," slashing the woman across her torso.
As she collapsed, the group didn't flee. Instead, they turned their sights on a 49-year-old man standing just five feet away. The pack fell upon him with the same brutality, punching him repeatedly before plunging a knife into his back.
The motive became clear in the final moments: the attackers snatched the man’s wallet from his person before sprinting northbound on Mermaid Avenue, leaving their victims for dead.
The Aftermath
First responders rushed both victims to NYU Langone Hospital. Miraculously, despite the torso slash and the spinal-area stab wound, both are listed in stable condition. Police are still working to determine if the two victims were together or simply strangers united by a moment of sheer terror.
