August 25, 2026 QUEENS, NY A 41-year-old man died in custody at Rikers Island early Tuesday morning, adding to a grim and rising body count within New York City’s municipal jail system.
Clarence Woodward was pronounced dead at 5:40 a.m. inside the Robert N. Davoren Center. According to the New York City Department of Correction (DOC), a correction officer conducting a routine facility tour called for medical emergency assistance at approximately 5:00 a.m. Officers administered aid until internal medical personnel and EMS arrived, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
NYC Correction Commissioner Stanley Richards confirmed the fatality later Tuesday morning.
"An individual in our care passed away early on Aug. 25," Richards said in an official statement. "Our department mourns the loss of Clarence Woodward and we share our deepest condolences with his family and loved ones. This tragedy will be thoroughly investigated."
Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated that the official cause of death remains undetermined pending a complete autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
Woodward’s death marks the seventh fatality in DOC custody in 2026, coming just five days after 36-year-old Christopher Rodriguez was found in severe medical distress on Aug. 20 at Bellevue Hospital’s new Outposted Therapeutic Housing Unit. Rodriguez was the first detainee to die in the specialized medical facility since its opening in April 2026.
Woodward had been held in pre-trial detention following an Aug. 8, 2024 arrest in Brooklyn. Prosecutors charged him with murder, manslaughter, and assault in connection with a double stabbing inside a 24-hour Claremont laundromat that left one man dead and another seriously injured. Police recovered two meat cleavers at the scene. Woodward had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Court records indicate Woodward’s case had experienced repeated adjournments over the past two years. He last appeared in court on July 28, with his next hearing scheduled for Sept. 29.
Per mandatory protocols, the DOC has notified multiple oversight agencies, including the Federal Monitor, the Board of Correction, the New York State Attorney General’s Office, the State Commission of Correction, and the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
The death immediately renewed fierce public pushback from criminal justice advocates demanding systemic intervention.
"How can we pretend that our legal system offers everyone the presumption of innocence when people are receiving a death sentence before a conviction?" said Darren Mack, co-director of the advocacy group Freedom Agenda.
