August 11, 2025 NEW YORK, NY — A night out in Times Square turned into a scene of terror early Saturday morning when gunfire erupted, injuring three people, including two innocent bystanders. The incident has once again brought to light the ongoing concerns about safety in one of the world's most famous destinations.

The chaotic scene unfolded just before 1:30 a.m. at the bustling intersection of West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue. According to police, a heated argument between a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old escalated, leading the younger individual to pull out a gun and fire multiple shots.

The intended target, the 19-year-old, was struck in the right foot. However, the violence didn't stop there. A stray bullet hit a 65-year-old man in the left leg, while an 18-year-old female tourist, visiting the city with her family, was grazed in the neck. All victims were taken to a local hospital and are in stable condition.

Bystanders and Vendors Speak Out

The shooting left witnesses shaken and questioning the safety of the area. Ibrahim Moustafa, who works nearby, told reporters, "It's not the first time here," referencing a past shooting where a friend was injured. "I'm not safe, but I work, what can I do?"

Vendors who were closing up for the night expressed a sense of resignation. Seny Dia, a vendor, said he relies on his faith to get through the workday. "I believe in God," he stated. "If God says I left my home, I go back home, I am going to go back."

The shooting also impacted tourists' perceptions of the city. Luis Ardilla, a visitor, lamented the violence. "I think it changes it for all the U.S.," he said. "It sucks, just because there is little that is being done."

The Unspoken Risks of a Crowded City

Despite the risks, vendors working in Times Square say such fights have become more frequent late at night. Yet, they also believe that the area's high visibility acts as a deterrent. "You can run but you cannot hide. You're never going to get away with these things," said Ndiasse Ndoya, another vendor, pointing to the numerous surveillance cameras that blanket the area.
