August 25, 2025 THE BRONX, NY— A night of community, competition, and basketball in the Bronx turned into a scene of terror and tragedy this past Saturday when gunfire erupted, leaving one man dead and four others wounded. The unprovoked attack, which occurred in a park filled with families and spectators, has left a community in shock and a city grappling with a seemingly endless cycle of violence.
A Community Event Erupts in Chaos
It was just after 7:00 p.m. at Haffen Park in the Baychester neighborhood, a large crowd gathered for a late-summer basketball tournament. But the cheers and the sounds of the game were suddenly shattered by the deafening crack of gunfire. Multiple shooters opened fire, sending men, women, and children scrambling for cover. In the ensuing panic, five people were struck by bullets, their lives forever changed.
New York Police Department (NYPD) officers arrived on the scene to find two victims with severe injuries. A 32-year-old man had been shot in the chest, and a 17-year-old girl, Anthonaya Campbell was shot in the face. Both were rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, where the man was tragically pronounced dead. The teenage girl was in critical condition as of Sunday.
In the chaotic aftermath, three other victims arrived at nearby hospitals by private vehicles, all with gunshot wounds. A 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were both shot in the back but were listed in stable condition. A 42-year-old man was also injured, shot in the arm, and was also in stable condition.
The Search for Answers
Police have not released the name of the man who was killed, pending notification of his family. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and police are urging anyone who witnessed the attack to come forward.
